Recent study suggests more protein = more weight loss

According to a recent article published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who follow high-protein diets may have more success losing weight than those who eat less protein and more carbohydrates. Researchers pooled results from 24 past trials that put subjects on reduced-calorie, low-fat diets. Half of the subjects were assigned to a high-protein diet (on average, about 120 grams of protein per day), while the other half consumed a standard-protein diet (on average, about 67 grams per day).
Both diets had an average energy intake, for males and females, of 1,550 calories per day, says study author Thomas Wycherley, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow from the University of South Australia in Adelaide. But over an average of 12 weeks, people who followed the high-protein diet lost 1.7 pounds more than those in the standard-protein group.
You may lose more weight on a high-protein diet because your body spends more energy processing dietary protein than it does carbohydrates, Wycherley says.
Think of it this way: If you eat 100 calories of protein, your body will burn about 20 to 30 of those calories while processing the protein, says Wycherley. Compare that to 100 calories of carbs, and your body only burns about 5 to 10 calories.
Another reason for the weight loss may be because protein helps preserve muscle mass. And since muscle mass burns more calories than other types of mass, the additional calorie burn could result in a decrease in weight.
Herbalife offers various ways to add extra protein to your diet. To find out more, please visit our site:

Tips to avoid overeating this Holiday

The following is a very informative and helpful article written by Susan Bowerman
Fast eater? 5 tips to help you slow down from Susan BowermanEating more slowly and mindfully can help you control how much you eat. Here are my favorite five tips for fast eaters to help you slow down and regain control.
A friend and I were swapping stories about last week’s Thanksgiving feast, and she mentioned to me that her uncle was the fastest eater she’d ever seen. When she was a little girl, she used to think her uncle was a magician – it seemed to her as if one minute he had food on his plate, and the next minute… zap!… his food had simply vanished.  One Thanksgiving, her aunt set a mirror infront of his dinner plate, thinking that he might just slow down if he watched himself shoveling it in.  Instead, he simply sat down – and complimented his wife on the creative table decor.
Eating quickly isn’t just a ‘table manners’ issue.  When you eat too fast, you don’t give your brain a chance to let you know when to stop, so it’s easier to overeat.  Fast eaters may not chew their food thoroughly – and they swallow a lot of air while they’re gulping it down – so it’s no wonder that speed eating can lead to indigestion.
Some recommended techniques to help you slow down seem downright silly – one old diet book I have on my shelf says that you should get really, really up close and personal with your food before you swallow it, suggesting that you “bring the slice of steak up to your nose, but don’t eat it just yet.  Instead, inhale deeply, taking in its aroma.  Now bring it to your lips but don’t nibble it just yet, just take a lick…”  Well, you get the idea.   I can’t imagine anyone taking this technique seriously….not to mention that it’s probably best practiced alone, in the privacy of one’s own home.
I don’t know anyone who benefited from eating in front of a mirror, either, nor do I know anyone who has – in their quest to slow themselves down – managed to sustain the habit of eating with children’s utensils or counting how many times they chew each bite.  But that’s not to say that “once a speed eater, always a speed eater”.  There are some practical things you can do to slow down your eating and rid yourself of that fast eater habit – without embarrassing yourself.

Eat in courses

Instead of serving all your food at one time, try eating in courses. Start your meal with a salad or a light soup first, or you might just try having your vegetables first.  When you start with the lowest calorie food, you’ll start to fill up on  fewer calories.

Set the mood

Soft lighting and slow music can help to slow the pace of your eating. The only downside is that you might linger at the table longer – so keep serving dishes off the table so you’re not tempted to ‘have just another bite’.

Eat foods at the proper temperature

We’ve all had those times when we’re so eager to eat, we zap some leftovers in the microwave until they’re just warm enough to be appealing – but not so hot that they can’t be eaten quickly.  On the other hand, when foods are piping hot (or – when it’s appropriate – nice and cold), you eat them more slowly.  It’ll take you longer to sip on any icy-cold protein shake that’s been made with frozen fruit than one that’s simply mixed together in a glass.  And if you have to blow on each spoonful of hot soup, it’ll slow your pace, too.

Don’t load your fork until you’ve swallowed the previous bite.

Next time you’re at the table with a fast eater, take note – at the same time they’re chewing one bite, their fork is usually locked and loaded for the next one.  If this sounds like you, here’s your mantra:  chew, swallow, load fork, repeat.

Take a half-time break.

About halfway through your meal, take a breather.  Sip some water, keep the conversation flowing, but just stop eating for a few minutes.  Then take a hunger reading.  You might be pleasantly surprised to find that you’re comfortable and satisfied – and that you’ve crossed the finish line.

Slow and steady.....

During your journey to better health, remember the story of the The Tortoise and the Hare. Whether your goal is weight loss or muscle gain, both are achieved through slow and steady effort. Sometimes people expect instant results, and they'll try to obtain it through drastic measures. They may reduce their calories to an extremely low level, or work out fanatically. They will eventually suffer burnout and therefore fail in their fitness goals. Success is achieved through consistency and time. If you follow a solid nutritional plan and exercise regimen, you will achieve your goals! Herbalife makes the nutritional aspect easy. Their 24 line is custom tailored to your specific goals. Shocking new study

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 3, 2012 (HealthDay News) — People who eat a so-called "Western diet," which is high in fat, salt and sugar, are at significantly greater risk for stroke or premature death, according to a new study involving rats.
Researchers from Canada found this type of food, also known as the "cafeteria diet," creates what they called "a ticking time bomb of health problems."
For the study, the researchers gave sedentary rats a choice of nutritional food pellets or junk food items including cookies, sausage and cupcakes. The animals were also given a choice of water or a 30 percent sugar solution that imitated soft drinks.
Like humans, the researchers said, the rats preferred the treats. And after eating a high-calorie, high-sugar and high-sodium diet for just two months, they developed symptoms of a condition known as metabolic syndrome, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and obesity — factors that increase the risk of stroke and other health problems.
The researchers noted that the rats were only the equivalent of about 16 to 22 years old in human years.
"I think we'll soon start to see people in their 30s or 40s having strokes, having dementia, because of this junk food diet," the study's lead researcher, Dr. Dale Corbett, scientific director of the Center for Stroke Recovery at Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation, said in a foundation news release. "Young people will have major, major problems much earlier in life."
The study authors said their findings underscore the need for regular exercise and a well-balanced diet to prevent metabolic syndrome.
"We're not sure whether metabolic syndrome can be reversed," noted Corbett. "If it can't, and we continue to live and eat like this, then we're each a ticking time bomb of health problems," he added.
Another expert, Dr. Mark Bayley, co-chair of the Canadian Stroke Congress and medical director of the Neurological Rehabilitation Program at Toronto Rehab, pointed out in the news release that "metabolic syndrome and stroke are huge health concerns for the public. We cannot afford to continue making poor nutritional choices. Our diet is killing us."
The study authors concluded that more research is needed to investigatethe risks of a poor diet on animals that have other health issues.
"Laboratory models often use relatively young animals who are healthier and on better diets than we are," Corbett noted. "However, it is important to remember that for many people, the consequences would be even worse, since a lot of people with stroke also have pre-existing health problems."
The study was scheduled to be presented Monday at the Canadian Stroke Congress, in Calgary. The data and conclusions of research presented at meetings should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. In addition, experts point out that results from animal research are not necessarily applicable to humans.
And while the study found an association between the unhealthy diets and an increase in health risk factors in the rats, it didn't prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

How I Did it... Body Building

"I actually know the date when I first tried the Herbalife24 line, because it changed my life that much. I thought to myself, this is what I've been waiting for. As an athlete, I wasn't able to perform to full capacity before discovering the products. It helped me to reach my goal."

I've always eaten healthy food and I wasn't really that overweight; in fact, I was already pretty athletic. However, I wanted to take it to the next level. My goal was to compete as a body builder. But I just wasn't there yet. I tried other products, but just didn't get the results I wanted. In fact, they made me look like a football player. I looked horrible.

I actually know the date when I first tried the Herbalife24 line, because it changed my life that much. It made everything easier for me. I thought to myself, this is what I've been waiting for. As an athlete, I needed better nutrition to perform to my expectations. Herbalife24 products helped me to reach my goal of being leaner and meaner. And with a lot of work, I became a vascular body builder. Now I'm ripped and have six-pack abs. Because I worked so hard to get here, I'm incredibly careful about what I put into my body. I eat well, take my Herbalife supplements, and NEVER have a cheat day. I always tell people, "It's easy to get healthy, but you have to want it. You have to have the desire."

To get extreme results, you have to have extreme discipline and being willing to sacrifice. I work hard and I feel good. When I hit the gym, I'm going into war. It's me against the weights. But honestly, it's amazing how beautiful the results are when you have the burning desire. Now I'm looking forward to being a fitness model, thanks to Herbalife!

Proper Nutrition For Bodybuilding - What to Eat Post Workout

Most people who work out know about having a pre-workout meal to help give your body energy for the workout. What a lot of people fail to do is properly feed their bodies after the workout. You generally have about 40 minutes in which your body is in a state that it will rapidly absorb nutrients like a dry sponge. This is one of the few times in which it is actually desirable to consume some simple carbs along with a decent supply of protein. The simple carbs help to boost insulin, which in turn boosts protein uptake. It will also help to lower cortisol, a hormone released by your body during times of stress. Cortisol will actually put your body into a catabolic state. This is the last thing you want! A proper post-workout meal will help your body turn into an anabolic (muscle building) state. After your workout, you want to get those nutrients into your body ASAP! Personally, I like to use a protein/carb shake.
I just recently started using the Herbalife24 brand shake named Rebuild Strength, and it is incredible! The great thing about it is that is has a Tri-core protein blend, meaning it has fast absorbing, medium absorbing, and long lasting proteins. Whichever brand you decide to use, try to make sure it has several different types of protein. After an intense workout, you want some whey protein, which is assimilated quickly in the body. This helps stop the catabolic state your body is in after an intense training session. Also, you want some medium and slow absorbing proteins (Casein), which will help to continually feed your muscles. It's also a good idea to ingest the slow absorbing proteins right before going to sleep. Again, most people know about pre-workout nutrition, but not enough people understand the importance of post-workout nutrition. Your body is ready and primed to absorb nutrients after a workout, and a proper post workout meal should contain all that your body demands in order to start the repairing and rebuilding of muscle tissue.
You can obviously eat a variety of high quality protein and carbs, but having a shake is nice because it's easy, fast, and you know exactly what nutrients you are putting in after your workout. I've been lifting weights for a long time, and only fairly recently have come to realize the importance of eating a proper meal in the short window after working out. I have definitely noticed a difference since doing so. In addition to it putting your body in an anabolic muscle building state, the post workout meal also helps set the stage for proper recovery and repair of your muscles.

Protein 101

By David Heber, M.D., Ph.D.

It seems that everywhere we look, someone is promoting a new diet that praises the power of protein. And whether you want to lose, gain or maintain your current weight, the importance of protein goes far beyond physical appearance and muscle building.

A necessity for every body

Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. It’s an organic compound composed of 22 amino acids—otherwise known as the building blocks of life. Protein is stored in muscles and organs, and the body uses it to build and repair tissues and to help produce enzymes and hormones. Proteins also enable blood to carry oxygen throughout the body.
Along with fat and carbohydrates, protein is a "macronutrient"—which means that the body needs relatively large amounts of it. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences states that our daily protein requirements should be 10% to 35% of our total caloric intake, with men needing slightly more than women need. A lack of protein can cause muscle mass loss, decreased immunity and weakening of the heart and respiratory system.

How protein affects your weight

High-protein diets are very popular because of their ability to help manage hunger. When protein is absorbed, it sends a signal to the brain to decrease your hunger.
Another benefit of protein is that it raises your resting metabolism by maintaining muscle mass. As we age, muscle mass decreases if you don’t exercise, so staying fit is key to burning fat by keeping your metabolism high. Protein also leads to a much less rapid rise and fall of blood sugar and insulin, so you avoid the "sugar highs and lows" after eating sweets without adequate protein. Certain foods, however, provide a healthier resource for protein than others.

Consider the source

You can obtain healthy sources of protein without high levels of saturated fat. For example, soybeans, nuts and whole grains provide protein without much saturated fat and offer plenty of healthful fiber and micronutrients as well. If you’re looking for another great source of healthy protein, vegetable protein sources in Herbalife’s Formula 1 are high quality and have low calorie levels with virtually no added fat. Herbalife products personalize your daily protein intake to match your body’s needs
Now that you’ve increased your knowledge of protein, you can effectively enhance your diet and allow good health to take shape.

Tip for making shakes

Herbalife's core weight management product is the  Formula 1 shake line. It contains protein, fiber and essential nutrients that can help support metabolism, cellular growth repair and production. A great way to increase the nutritional contents and to help you feel fuller for a longer period is to add 2 scoops of the Herbalife PDM (Protein drink Mix) to the shake. By doing so, you are adding an additional 15 grams of hunger fighting protein! I also like to add a cup or so of ice, then blend till desired consistency.  There are many low cal additions you can add....such as fruit, tablespoon of Jello instant pudding mix, tablespoon of peanut butter.....the possibilities are endless. By replacing 2 meals with a shake, having 2 healthy snacks, and then having a sensible third meal, your body will turn into a fat burning machine! Most people make the mistake of eating too few calories. Of course, you will initially lose weight, but your body will be put into a starvation mode and you'll end up slowing down your metabolism. That's the LAST thing you want to do! If you would like some more info, please feel free to contact us!

Many people know about pre-workout nutrition, but not enough people understand the importance of post-workout nutrition. Your body is ready and primed to absorb nutrients after a workout, and Rebuild Strength has all that your body demands in order to start the repairing and rebuilding of muscle tissue. Each shake contains the following nutrients:

  • 24 g whey and casein proteins create a rapid and sustained protein-building state
  • Tri-core protein-amino blend of free amino acids, whey and casein proteins help rebuild muscle and speed recovery
  • Iron essential for red blood cell protection
  • Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) support muscle growth
  • L-Glutamine supports immune function and promotes muscle repair

Welcome to my Herbalife blog. I started this blog as a way to reach out to as many people as I could in order to not only promote Herbalife products, but to also show others how Herbalife can help them to reach their own nutritional goals. My wife and I are not only Herbalife distributors, but are also Herbalife users and believers! We have been using some of the Herbalife products for just under a month, and the results so far have been extremely impressive.
